1st Gear Motorcycle Training

Fantastic experience: Signed up late in the year so I was able to get a slight discount and a single day private lesson. Lee and Kiefer are amazing instructors, best thing I learned was to have confidence handling the machines. The bike selection is wide so you have plenty of styles to choose from, and the instructors focus on building up your skills and confidence so you don't get hung up on small mistakes. Well worth taking the course if you're a beginner!

Fantastic experience: I strongly recommend 1st Gear Motorcycle Training course. Lee and his team are top notch people. Melanie and Adam were very helpful. I went from never riding a bike to being comfortable with bike in the two days training session. Lee and Melanie were very patient and provided the needed feedback until I passed my MST test. Fantastic experience: I took motorcycles lessons with First Gear in September 2024. I had never even touched a motorcycle up until that point. I had Lee as the in-class theory instructor and Adrian for my parking lot lessons. The in class lessons teach you important life saving techniques and tips. They go over accidents and talk about how to avoid/prevent these types of accidents. Invaluable experience. As for the actual motorcycle lessons, you don’t even start the motorcycle until 2 hours into the lessons. They walk you through every step of the motorcycle. Extremely thorough and beginner friendly for someone who has never ridden before. My road ride was cancelled (due to the atmospheric river) and in replacement of that Lee gave me a private prep road ride test. I don’t think I would have passed my actual road ride test without his help. I can’t recommend First Gear enough, they are thorough, friendly, and amazing! If you are thinking about trying motorcycle riding, I highly recommend you take their lessons.

Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience at 1st gear! The instructors were fantastic—patient, knowledgeable, and very encouraging. The classes are well-structured, and they take the time to explain everything clearly, from basic controls to road safety. The practice sessions give you plenty of time to get comfortable on the bike, and there is an opportunity to switch between different motorcycles. One think that I love is how flexible they are. At the beginning, it wasn't clear to me how to schedule the classes (after the basic skill test), but then I understood that they open the classes based on the weather conditions and the number of students. They also take care of booking the tests with ICBC, which saves plenty of time and delays. All in all, the business is ran by people with passion, who treat the students as future members of the riding community. This is a great beginning for anyone interested to get SAFELY into the motorcycling world! Thanks again to the team for such a positive experience!

Fantastic experience: Mel & Adrian did an amazing job teaching me to ride! I went from having never sat on a motorcycle to passing my MST on the first attempt over the course of one weekend. They were clear when explaining concepts and did a great job at stressing why each lesson was important for real-world riding situations. I finished the weekend with the confidence to ride my own motorcycle around local roads, enabling me to practice my skills on my own time. I'm looking forward to learning more with them as I prepare to pass the road test and get my full license.

Positive experience: Chill Fun learning environment, but stressful road test experience for fresh bike-less student Signed up for the full course with classes, 2 days MST and 3 road rides, as I was completely new to motorcycles and don’t own a bike. Had the expectation to be fully prepared for road test by the end of the course. Course was decently paced. Instructors are nice and humorous. Tried out many different bikes and enjoyed the rides. For the road test, I did make a mistake for waiting too long after passing the MST. As I had to do road ride Lv1 which was mostly refreshing riding skills in the parking lot, with only like 15 min. Of road riding. Lv2 and 3 are much more valuable to gain road riding confidence and experience. However, all these rides are group rides, which means students can’t practice ICBC test at all. Or at least limited for me, as I was either struggling with bike (different bike for each ride due to lack of availability) or catching up with group. Not much attention left to notice signs, maintaining proper speed, doing proper shoulder checks etc. *there were also No personal feedback on how well we do on the LV 3 ICBC road prep, so I was clueless on my performance and had minimal confidence after it *tip: be very early for road rides if you want to practice on the same bike My only chance to practice solo ride was on the day of the test , as rental bike is provided 90 minutes prior to the test (supposedly). Lee was late for 20 minutes due to train crossing, which was out of control understandably. However, as he arrived he Never apologised, and most importantly, there was no urgency in getting the bike ready. I had to urge him and explain why I need the practice time to get him going (even so, he was doing it nice and relaxed with no sense of speeding up) I passed the test fortunately, as I have done significant preparation before hand with online and other courses material (given by friend). However i am quite disappointed with the attitude of Lee, the unnecessary stressful experience and in general the structure of the course - for the full package specifically: it’s NOT designed to help fresh riders without bikes to prepare fully unless you take additional solo classes. I’m sure there are many good experience for most people(if not all?) here, and I came here because of the reviews too, but I also feel the need to share my side of experience due to quite a contrast of expectation, and if best help eliminating this gap for students in the future.

Fantastic experience: Great riding place and team. Did mine in October, some rain but got pretty lucky for what the forecast predicted. Would recommend trying for a sunnier weekend cause it allows for more focus on the basics. However its not essential as the instructors where great and accommodation in the conditions expressing techniques and ways to combat the rain itself. Also some rain gear is provided which makes for a happy day instead of a miserable one. Got to try a ton of different bikes of all shapes and sizes helping in selecting a bike. Overall great staff and great facility.

Fantastic experience: Informative and experienced instructors. I took the motorcycle course in Langley and had an amazing time. The instructors in Langley are well experienced and will teach you how to ride properly and safely. The instructor mentioned and made sure we understood all rules and safety protocols of motorcycling and made sure we were well prepared before testing us for our MST. Highly recommend taking your course in Langley. They know their stuff.

Fantastic experience: Took the group course for MSA. Could not be any happier with the instructors Mel and Adrian. Both of them were clear and concise with each drill we had done. They had made me feel very comfortable with each lesson and answered any questions I had with a detailed response. Can’t wait for the road ride to obtain more experience and be a safer rider!

Fantastic experience: I attended the group lessons and highly recommend 1st Gear. I was in Melanie's group, and she is an AWESOME teacher. She makes learning fun, pushes you just the right amount, and simplifies the learning process. It feels like you're playing and learning at the same time. By the end of the class, we were all riding, making tight U-turns, and navigating slaloms. Melanie, please keep spraying the water! :) As for the course, there's an at-home component (online), followed by an in-person class and then the actual riding sessions. The online course teaches several things that are difficult to learn without formal instruction, and this continues in the in-person class. Lee shared multiple experiences and real-life examples—things you wouldn’t learn unless someone teaches you or you experience them firsthand (at great cost). The riding class spans two days, starting with walking the bike and ending with the MST. After the class, the MST felt very easy, and I wouldn't have passed it without this training. I got my motorcycle today, and in my first 50 km, I found myself applying many of the concepts Melanie taught—walking the bike slowly, using the clutch to control speed, keeping my feet up while riding in traffic, etc. What’s taught really translates into real-world riding. Thanks, Melanie and Lee, for running this wonderful course!

Fantastic experience: TLDR: Learned to ride in two days with no experience. Shoutout to Melanie, Trevor, Tony for making it so easy I came in to 1st gear without any experience with riding. This was an unforgettable weekend. The group of people i was with was supportive and encouraging. The environment is very beginner friendly, and I can't recommend Mel, Trevor, and Tony enough. Fantastic experience: I have recently completed MSA training course with 1st gear, and couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. The training was well-structured, covering everything from basic riding skills to advanced maneuvers. For me, the highlight of this great experience was our instructor, Melanie Lewis. Apart from being a great human being, with extensive knowledge, she knows how to connect with students with each different skill level. There were 9 students in our class and we all agreed that she connected with all of us as a group while making effort to connect with each individual student, tailoring and personalizing her tips and guidance. Fantastic experience: I had an hour session with Melanie to prepare for my motorcycle skills test and she was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and encouraging. I passed on my first try! Ted, who met me at ICBC with the test bike, was fantastic too---so helpful, and bonus points for being hilarious! All around a very positive experience.

Fantastic experience: Instructor: My skills course was led by Kiefer, who was informative, safe, and humorous. Initially, I was having troubles with getting the controls down but Kiefer was able to provide targeted feedback which helped me get confident on the bike. He was ready to demonstrate a skill or answer our questions in a clear, succinct manner which was much appreciated. Of course, it was a blast to have him as an instructor since he'd crack a joke to help loosen up the tension from being on a bike for the first time! Overall, a great instructor to have. Course Evaluation: I found the course to be organized well: covering and practicing the skills needed to succeed in the MSA/MST, and sprinkling some real-world scenario skills in the mix to ensure you can keep yourself safe. They did well to systematically teach a skill that would be followed up by another related skill- thus putting more practice into the one you've just learned. The allotment of time to practice skills for the MSA/MST was generous and, with constant feedback from the instructor, made the seemingly daunting examination much more relaxed. Classroom Portion: Pat, who taught the classroom portion in my course was knowledgeable and provided lots of real-world examples of what to look out for. His approachable demeanor made the classroom portion much more enjoyable. He also gave great tips on how to be safe and effective on the road. Communication/Administration: The emails you get when you sign up for the course are detailed and will tell you exactly what you need. The instructors (both classroom and skills course) will ensure that you are in the loop for next steps as well. Overall, they make sure that you know what to expect so you aren't caught off guard.

Fantastic experience: 1st gear is one of the most efficient and effective place to get your MST and Road Test done at first try. Lee is very knowledgeable about what ICBC do on MST and Road Test. I only had to do 1hr of bike ride and I passed my MST first try then 2hr of road test prep ride and I passed my road test on first try. Really really happy with the results and I highly recommended this place to everyone who wants to pass their road test or mst or want to learn advanced riding. Keep up the good work 1st gear

Some highlights (not limited to) - Tons of motorcycles to learn riding with on the lot - Knowledgeable and super friendly staff - Tons of tips around riding, safety, gear/motorcycle shopping - Fast response via email PS. Fantastic experience: A big thank you to Mel, Adrian & Lee . As someone with zero riding experience, I joked to friends it would be a miracle if in 2 days they could take me from zero to passing the MST test. Well miracles are real but it was really thanks to the great instructors that my MST is completed. A few more weeks to practice skills in the parking lot and continue building confidence but looking forward to the road rides in future. I also appreciated that one of the theory classes was online. As someone with a busy schedule & early morning work, this was a big factor in choosing 1st gear for that flexibility and it was a well done video course.

Fantastic experience: I've been saving writing this review until I've gone through the whole process of getting my Class 6 license which just occurred today. I'm an experience dirt bike motorcycle rider having owned one since the age of 11. It was always my intention to get a full class 6, but life has thrown some curveballs. 50 yrs old now. My experience with 1st Gear has been top notch. I've continued to learn and now ride a much heavier bike. I had to redo a Skills test with them after my learners expired. I appreciate having them continue to honor the road rides and road test prep that should of expired. Two weeks ago, I failed my road test with ICBC in Burnaby, but I believe that the examiner was having a bad day. 1st gear was able to reschedule me exactly at the 2 week mark. Todays road test experience in Richmond was way better. I highly recommend enrolling with this motorcycle school if you want to get your motorcycle license.

Fantastic experience: I hated the idea of waiting 5 weeks to do my ICBC exam so i signed up to this to save time. Even though i've been riding for over a decade, i was surprised to find how useful the course was as a refresher but also a blast away of bad habits formed over the years. Adam, Ted and Kiefer are all excellent educators who hold your feet to the fire and make sure you are safe and hitting their high expectations. They do this with humour, love and sobering warnings about why their expect high. I thought i'd blah blah blah through the course, but found it insightful, challenging and fun. Better than booking a test and shooting in the dark as to what they're looking for. Money well spent. Fun days in the sun too.

Fantastic experience: What can I say ? Thought by watching YouTube videos and talking to friends who own a bike that it would be easy riding, but boy was I wrong I’m so glad I signed up for 1st gear all the instructors there were awesome each in their own way. Adam, Ted, keffer, and Lionel were all great whether it’s from their experience or they way their teachings were each gave me a ton of knowledge and I’m proud to say these guys are the real deal. So if you’re looking to get on a bike I highly recommend you take their course it will prepare you way more than u think. Don’t be a know it all go to 1st gear and sign up you will thank them later when you become not just a better rider but a safer one !!!

Fantastic experience: Cannot say enough positive things. The instructors Mel, Patrick,Adrian, and Lee were professional, clear and direct, gave a lot of constructive criticism and encouragement. I felt comfortable the entire time. Their facility is great with ample space to learn and practice, felt safe the entire time and they provided us with many types of motorcycles. I would say if you're looking for a professional riding course + MST exam you should register with 1st Gear. 10 out of 10 recommend it! Thank you 1st Gear. Update: just got my class 6

Fantastic experience: My son and I took this training and can attest to the value. If you are planning on hitting the streets with a motorcycle of any size under you you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to tough this course out. Not only do we feel prepared to hop on bikes, but we are much more aware of all of the unique threats that motorcyclists face. Get ready for some tough love, but know that these pressures you face in the training mirrors life on two wheels in traffic and when your degree of focus and calm could make a life or death difference, it’s well worth pushing you out of your comfort zone to develop a thicker skin.

Fantastic experience: The amount of support available from the instructors after the course is top notch. I originally took the three day Learn to Ride course in 2021 and passed the MST that is included in the course... but then did not ride for almost two years. Recently I retook my knowledge test and then contacted them to schedule an individual parking lot session to prepare to retake the MST, but was invited to join on a road prep/ride session instead (at a much lower cost!). It was enough to give me confidence to easily pass my MST retake on the first try. Thanks 1st Gear!

Fantastic experience: I had a great experience with this school. They made the whole process of getting my license easy and as stress free as possible. The instructors have a lot of experience. Lee, Ed, Ted, Lionel, Mel, and Patrick had lots of great insight and instruction. I actually had my motorcycle license several years ago in another country, but I was self taught with bad habits, and rusty. This course was an excellent refresher, and the experienced instructors ironed out my bad habits. Highly recommended. They have a great selection of bikes to learn on as well.

Fantastic experience: Great experience with 1st Gear Motorcycle School. I had Ed and Ted for the lot training. They are super friendly, knowledgeable and supportive. Fantastic experience: I did the "Complete Rider" course this summer/fall and couldn't be happier with the instruction and support from 1st Gear. I got to learn from and ride with many different instructors and each had unique perspectives and lessons to share. I also got to ride a variety of different bikes that really helped me determine which style I am most comfortable with. The lessons, the road rides and road test prep were all great - I'd do it again! Thanks to everyone at 1st Gear, it was a really great experience!

Fantastic experience: Thank you Lee and 1st gear team for helping me get my class 6. I attended the class in 2021 but was not able to book my ICBC road test until 2022. I redo my MST test with and The fact they allow me to go for a test prep ride after a whole year later was awesome. I can recommend these guys s enough. Class was fun and very informative.

Fantastic experience: Melanie and Patrick are great instructors. Very funny and accommodating, and at the same time emphasizing the important bits. The curriculum is easy to digest and techniques are demonstrated beforehand. Everything is done in incremental baby steps so you don't feel overwhelmed. Additional techniques are also taught that aren't in ICBC's book that are critical for having on the road. 10/10 would recommend, even if you don't plan on riding on the street it's a fun time.

Fantastic experience: This program is awesome, all of the instructors are so down to earth and funny. They make it very enjoyable and comfortable to learn to ride. Fantastic experience: I'm 47, been procrastinating for 30 years to get my motorcycle license. I had dirt bikes as a teenager, I knew I'd remember how to ride a motorcycle, but being older and wiser (hehe) I knew I could benefit immensely from proper training. All the instructors we're awesome. Lee runs a tight ship, well organized. I just bought my first motorcycle last week and can still hear TED yelling at me to do things better, to pay attention, to stop looking down etc. It may seem harsh while training, but for me, it works. You end up wanting to hear him say something nice :P Thanks again Ted and crew. Fully recommend.

Fantastic experience: I'm a 20 plus years rider from Brazil. When I moved to Canada, I had to redo my motorcycle license, and I had LIONEL from 1st gear help me with my MST. He was not only very knowledgeable, but he taught me the minutia of the exam and what to expect. Less than 2 hours after our session, I was at ICBC getting my new driving statement. Not only do I recommend this school, but my wife is also getting her MST done soon, hopefully we can retain Lionel's services again.

Fantastic experience: Ted was a fantastic instructor. I opted for private lessons and he took the time to fully and thoroughly explain all the necessary skills and drills required. He was attentive and really helped me master the skills always with a big smile and encouraging words. !st gear as a school was excellent start to finish. The course content was easy to follow and understand and I feel like I am a safer and more skilled rider as a result. Hats off to Ted and the team at 1st gear. I would highly recommend. Even though today was a scorcher I leaned a lot and had fun along the way. If you get Ted as an instructor keep your ears open, he's got decades of riding and driving anything with wheels under his belt and he truly wants to teach you to be safe and skilled. I will return to 1st gear for some sort of further education in the future. If you're going to ride I fully recommend 1st gear!

Fantastic experience: The online and classroom portion with Lee was great. The online portion was straight forward and very easy to understand and easy to navigate on the website. Ted was a great instructor during the hands-on portion! He may yell at you a lot, not to be mean, but it's because he wants to prepare you on being a safe rider on the road, and to not develop any bad habits. From someone who has zero experience in riding a motorcycle, Ted made it easy for me to learn and catch on pretty quick. He explained and demonstrated very clearly and was open to whatever questions that was thrown at him. He gave constructive feedback after each exercise and was very encouraging throughout. I was lucky to be in a smaller group, so it almost felt like a private session and Ted made the environment very comfortable and fun. Thanks Ted!

Fantastic experience: Fantastic course! If you’re even THINKING about getting your motorcycle license, make room in your budget for this. The instructors that I worked with are all great (not naming names, but they know who they are). I really felt like I walked away with the skills, knowledge, and habits to prepare me for the road and keep me alive out there. Regarding the hands-on part of the course, they did a great job of handling a variety of learning speeds. It never felt like they were giving up on the people who were struggling or unfairly spending less time with those who caught on quicker (although admittedly I was more middle-of-the-pack, so that’s a second hand observation). Their criticism and feedback was constructive, and what could have seemed like harsh delivery never felt mean thanks to their sense of humour and how excitedly they celebrated your victories (especially if you were struggling with a certain skill or bad habit for a while).

Fantastic experience: 1st gear in Coquitlam was an excellent choice. Ted and Christopher were awesome! It is clear that they both really care about making you a safer rider, all while having fun at the same time.
